J Fuel, l think that is what they still call it, is a petroleum product.
It is a mixture of Kerosene type stuff and Alcohol.

aviation fuel is kerosen and there are three main types available. the most common in general aviation is a blue colored low octane fuel rating around 90, the other is a red colored high octane fuel with a rating around 115. The third aviation fuel is jet fuel which is yellow in color, it is named jet- A1 or avtur.
Kerosen is a bi- product of petrolumn distillation.

There r two main forms of aviation fuel - Jet fuel & AvGas. Jet fuel is used for turbine aircraft. This includes jets & turboprop aircraft. Jet Fuel is a refined kerosene that typically has an anti-gelling additive. The gelling additive prevents the fuel from gelling at high altitudes where it is VERY cold. Piston engine aircraft use AvGas. AvGas is similar to automotive gas & in fact is a gasoline range product [more on this]. Typically, the only AvGas made now is 100LL. This is 100 octane with low levels of tetraethyl lead. Less commonly u will find people who use auto gas in their piston aircraft, but that is not very common [or smart].

All aviation fuels r produced in a refinery similar to how automotive gas is produced. The oil is fractionated & they r able to extract different compounds based upon boiling temperature.

Aviation fuels, like all fossil fuels, r refined from crude oil by refining companies. Crude oil contains a wide variety of petroleum products that can be separated by weight.

The heaviest component of crude oil is asphalt, which is used for highway paving & for roofing tar. Just above the tars come the polymers that plastics r based on. Next come various layers of lubricating oil. Fuel oils, including heating & diesel fuel, kerosene & gasoline, come next.

Volatile compounds like propane, butane, & acetylene r at the top. These r separated at the refinery by boiling them off one at a time at different temperatures in a process called ''cracking.''

For much more information including photos & diagrams, try an internet search on ''petroleum refining.''

JET A1 (AVTUR) is a Kerosene mixture that is used in turbine aircraft in Commercial and General Aviation.

JP-8 (JP-5) are military grave jet fuels that are similar

AVGAS or 100L is a high octane gasoline for piston aircraft

All are refined from crude oils just like all other fossil fuels
