Well l am thinking about going to school to be a pilot but l really do not think l could stand to be away from home 4 or 5 days a week. Does any one know of a good job thats pays decent that will let you go home every night?l have heard that you should become a pilot because you love to fly and not for any other reason. l love to fly but l am just not sure l am willing to give up so much to make it happen.So are there any good jobs out there?Would they justify me spending $45,000 on flight training plus $20,000 on a college degree??

When you become a pilot, you mostly take what ever job you can get.

On some jobs (like island hoppers) you do not travel far. But you also do not get paid much working for small companies.

Being a Pilot is NOT just a Career, it is also a Serious responsibilty. Even a local Island to Island, Cargo Only Pilot, can cause death & destruction on those he crashes into, as he ponders how much he really wants be a pilot. Save us ALL (& You) a lot of time/misery & become a phone Maintaince Technican.

Instructors would be a great selection or if you worked for government like cop or fire departments maybe news or if you just became a charter pilot but none of these would need a college degree

the company l work for your home everynight try easyjet and ryanair.being a pilot is hard with a lot of exams but if its something you really want then go for it .days can be long eg from 10 am to 11 pm at night and if you have any delays

l believe the 1st. answer.You get what you can get.

Any endeavor you try is going to involve give and take. What is your definition of decent pay? Your best bet would be a flight instructor if you want to be home most nights.

As someone mentioned , being a pilot is not a job , its a lifestyle , if you cannot make the commitment to go to work every single time you have to , then do not look into this feild , the only other alternative would be a CFI.

Allegiant Air has very few layovers. It is still a small company, but making money these days & still growing. It is business plan is very similar to Ryan Air in Ireland.

Whether or not u can justify spending money on flight training is a question nobody can answer for you. You have to decide that this career is what u want to do, & spend the money. You may make it, u may not. You will have to pay ur dues, & work at a smaller airline or fly cargo to build ur experience before u can get the job u want. If u can not see being away from home that much, then look for another career. You may also have to move, or commute, that is just the way it works. If u do not like heat, l would suggest u do not get a job laying down asphalt, either.

Sure, there are pilot jobs that involve few layovers. --Some of the commuter and regional pilot jobs.
