From a pilot:

The pointed (or rounded) nose is used to reduce drag. Stick your hand out of a car window and point your fingers into the wind, it is easy to hold position and you feel very little drag.

Now put your palm facing the wind and you will feel quite a big force trying to push your hand back. It takes more energy (thrust) from you to hold your hand like this than it would with your ''pointy'' fingers pointing into the windstream.

Aerodynamics. Able to go faster and/or maintaina speed with less fuel.

Actually that is a very good question. A pointed nose is not aerodynamic. A rounded nose creates a boundary layer of trapped air and air to air resistance is less than air to metal friction. Pointed noses in today is technology are for low radar signature.

If any one doubts a rounded nose is more aerodynamic, take a fluid that will conform to the perfect shape of least resistance. It is called a raindrop. Which end is pointed?
