We saw this thing today and it was pretty loud, fairly low, and flat. What was it? Included is a picture of its shape.

It is a B-2. Now manufactured by Boeing.
It is used by the United States Air Force as a stealth, strategic, nuclear bomber. As in, it drops nukes; the aircraft itself is not nuclear powered.

It has 4 engines & is essentially a flying wing. Computer assisted because a human would not be able to handle the flying characteristics of an aircraft with that shape. Can carry just about every sort of bomb or missile in the NATO inventory. Has a ring laser-gyro inertial navigation system, GPS, & state-of-the-art targeting systems like infra-red sensors, TV, laser targeting sensors etc.


Its flat & unconventional shape is the direct product of the designers trying to incorporate stealth into the design. Stealth in this case means an aircraft that is near invisible to enemy radar.

l am surprised u saw one flying. They do not usually go on display. The B-2 is pretty quiet for military airplane but if it was low u could say it was loud.

This was a b-2 stealth bomber originally created by northrop during the cold war to sneak into soviet territory without being detected and hit by SAMs (Surface to Air Missles). However today they are used in iraq and afghanistan. At first only 21 of them were produced at 2 billion dollars each.

That is definitely a B-2. It has a really distinctive silouette as it is the only large flying wing out there. Its flat upper & lower surfaces, combined with a lack of tails or fins sticking up leave very little for radar energy to bounce off of. This makes it very hard to spot. Despite being such a large plane, it has a radar return around the size of a small bird. Most radar systems will just ignore it altogether. Aside from being very hard to detect, it has incredible range. They actually fly many of their missions from their main bases in Missouri or Diego Garcia. It is pretty amazing that pilots of the B-2 can fly halfway around the world, drop their bombs or launch cruise missiles, & be home to see their families that day or the next. Currently the B-2 Spirit. There was a propeller driven aircraft that was built in the 50's, that l cannot think of the name of. It used pusher type propellers to push the a/c thropugh the sky's
