How many aircraft have crashed after being struck by lightning

On record only one. In 1967 a fuel tank on a plane exploded & blamed on lightning. see the link below for some great info on this fact. l work at an airport & even as recent as three weeks ago a delta plane on the ground was hit & sustained damage but was on the ground. l have to add that is not correct to say that a plane is struck by lightning it is more correct to say that the plane flew int the lightning as lightning has a pre-determined course & the plane flew into that course thus striking the lightning

there was a few parked on the ground & when hit by lightning, the plane caught fire or exploded.
there was once, a helicopter got struck by lightning, & crashed into the sea. Everyone survived though.
After that accident, composite blades were added with metal parts to decrease electric resistance.

why flying, a airplane will be unaffected to a lightning strike. All essential equipment r shielded from these hazards. There were lightning dissipators on older planes. On the newer, mostly composite planes, there is a wire mesh under the skin to conduct electricity because composite has high electric resistance.

A few years ago, l knew of a girl & her father flying in a small wooden plane that was struck by lightning, & they both died. My understanding was that maybe minute traces of moisture in the wood caused it to vaporize & ''explode,'' but l am not sure if that is correct or not.. anyway, after that happened, l assumed it was more common on the little planes. Before that l thought that all (metal) aircraft were protected by the faraday cage principal, but now l wonder. To those saying a plane has to be ''grounded,'' it really does not matter considering you've got an arc of electricity spanning all the way from the sky, glancing the plane, & hitting the ground, so in that moment it IS grounded.

Hardly any, l have been on one one and most people did not even notice. Planes are designed so well these days that there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

For large airplanes, it is a small number. Newer airplanes are tested and certified to avoid fuel explosions from lightning current.
