l have flown a Piper Super Cub. It was a blast, & l had a lot of fun with it. However, l never completed my tailwheel rating (ran out of money).

Tailwheel aircraft fly just like any other aircraft, but they require much more control of the rudder during takeoff, & especially during landing. With a tricycle gear aircraft, u can put the aircraft down on the runway & it will (usually) straighten itself out. If u put a tailwheel aircraft onto the runway without it being lined up properly, u could be in for a wild ride.

Give it a try. It is a lot of fun, & l certainly wish l had been able to finish up that rating.

Yes, it is harder in that you have to pay more attention, more difficult -- no, but harder. Most ''spam-can'' pilots, once the three wheels have contact, put their feet on the floor. You must fly a taildragger until it is tied down.

There are several books, but the best way to learn is doing, better in a J-3 on grass in the early morning dew when it is wet.

l soloed in an Aeronca Chief in 1964, and have always believed it made me a better pilot. l still own the same airplane, and l would recommend that everybody learn to handle an airplane the way a tail wheel machine will teach you.

Warbird Pilot has more types than l have, though l did fly a B-17 once. It was not a job--it was an adventure.

You will learn what your feet are for. Tailwheels are not difficult, and you do not have to be a superman (or superwoman) to fly one. You just have to pay attention to what you're doing; and keep paying attention until you've got the airplane tied down.

Tailwheel pilots generally know how to keep an airplane going straight down a runway better than the nosewheel folks.

If any midwing high performance simulator is the same thing, then it is harder for me. However, I've thought of something else for quite awhile now that should've occured to me much earlier. Do you think that American or TWA started out with tricycle gear? Of course not. They were ALL taildraggers. l wish l had a DC-3.
