The X49 Scramjet achieved the fastest airbreathing speed in level flight: 9.0Mach.
The fastest MANNED aircraft is the SR71 at 3.8Mach.
The fastest manned aircraft still in service is the MiG25 Foxbat at 2.8Mach.
EDIT: l for one did not include the X15 as it is not an airbreather.

l was certain someone would beat me to it, but apparently not.

The X-15 is the fastest MANNED plane, with a speed of over mach 6.
It is rocket powered, and is dropped from the wing of a B-52.
All pilots who flew them above 35 miles elevation were awarded their astronaut wings years later.
