Yeesh, calm down.

The ''F'' stands for Fighter & ''A'' stands for Attack. It means the aircraft can fulfill both fighter & ground attack roles (commonly called a ''multirole'' fighter).

''18'' is a designation given to the aircraft. For a while the numbers went sequentially (F-14, F-15, etc). The F/A-18 is based on a design that was designated YF-17 & entered in a competition in 1973 to offer a cheaper alternative to the F-14.

The name ''Hornet'' (''Super Hornet'' only refers to the E & F models) is a semi-random code name given to the aircraft.

It is really not a ''why'' kind of thing. ''FA'' is the designation for a certain class of Fighter aircraft (as in ''F''), and it is the 18th design that was prototyped for that contract.

It is not really a big deal; it is just the way the armed services designate airplanes. Please do not get so upset.

The F-18 hornet originally beat the F-17 for the navy is mutlirole fighter. After a few years, it was heavily modified for higher performance and more of an attack role. Its name was changed to the F/A-18 and SUPER hornet. Because it is much better than the old F-18

Dude,
ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERING SHOUTING AND IS VERY RUDE!
That aside here is how it came down:
The YF17 was the loser to the F16 for the USAF is Lightweight Fighter Competition. The Navy & Marine Corps were looking for replacements for the F4 (USMC), F14 (USN) & A6 (Both). They realized with considerable mods this aircraft could fit the bill. The number 18 comes after 17, that is it: YF17, F18.
Originally, there were two versions: the A-18 which had sensors & software optimized for the air-mud role, & the F-18 which was optimized more for air-air. Rather than run parallel programs, the aircraft was modded so that the F18A had both sets of sensors & software. Hence the F/A-18 designation.
The F18E/F mod is r called ''Super Hornets'' as they have redone engines, more fuel & better sensors/payload.
OBTW the F18G model is going to be the new EW/SEAD jet replacing the EA6.
See, not that a big a deal.

The F stands for Fighter
The A stands for Attack
The F/A-18 can be an attack plane as well as a fighter plane (fighter and attack planes are different)

But l can not explain the name, the creators of the F/A-18 just gave it that name.

F stands for Fighter. A stand for Attack. This signifies the intended roles of the aircraft. Both air to air and air to ground in this case. The number is just a model number to distinguish one plane from another. The name Hornet was chosen for this aircraft, it is just a chosen name, nothing more. The Super Hornet is the most recent version of the Hornet and is bigger, and more powerful than previous versions, hence the ''Super'' part.

F = Fighter
A = Attack
The F/A-18 is an attack/fighter plane. Very reliable plane.
Its a Super Hornet cause it can reach speeds breaking the sound barrier.

Short answer..
It is a multi role aircraft.
F for fighter as in air to air
A for attack as in air to ground bombing & ground support.
The Super Hornet is a variant of the Hornet that has been stretched, has more wing area & fuel capacity.
