suck squeeze bang blow.

air is sucked in. compressed through sets of fans. compressed r is mixed with fuel in the combustion chamber. resulting explosion is channeled back to propel the plane forward. As it exits, it makes fans in the rear spin, these fans r on the same shaft as the front ones which means after it starts going, a jet engine is self sustained. It will keep going until it runs out of fuel.

try here for further details

variations of the jet engines include by passing some or most of the air around the combustion center. this quiets the engine down & increases efficiency.

David S is just about spot on, it works on ''THRUST''. A jet engine takes in the outside air, ''INLET DUCT'' compresses it in the ''COMPRESSOR'' , then injects fuel into the mixture in the burner section, this then enters the ''TURBINES'' where it is further compressed then ejected through the exhaust pipe.
Thrust comes from the difference between the inlet air temperature & pressure & the exhaust temperature & pressure.
A bypass engine which most modern aircraft use allows extra air to enter around the inlet area & mix into the burner area, which further increases thrust & allows a quieter operation & less fuel.
Because only around 75% of the fuel mixture is used up, Military aircraft use an afterburner where they inject more fuel after the initial turbine phase, ignite it again, then it goes through a second set of turbines allowing a greater increase in temperature & pressure.
Military aircraft also have variable exit nozzles which close in & expand increasing again the pressure. Usually only used on take off or during evasion because of the high amount of fuel used.
Also the air entering the INTAKE & then into the Compressor must always be subsonic even if the aircraft goes supersonic, otherwise Compressor Stalls can occur. Basicaly they design mechanisms to slow down the air before it enters the Compressor.
Hope this simple explanation helps you.

At the basic level, it is a transfer of momentum. Picture yourself standing on a small, 4 wheeled cart. You r holding a bowling ball, & the cart is standing still. If u throw the bowling ball off the back of the cart, the cart will move forward. The bowling ball does not have to push against the air or hit the ground for the cart motion to occur. It occurs as soon as u let go of the ball.

If u continue to throw bowling balls off the back, the cart will continue to accelerate forward. A jet engine is continually throwing a lot of mass out of the exhaust to create thrust. It does this by pulling air in the front with a compressor, adding fuel, & then igniting it so it will go out the back faster than it came in the front. Since momentum = mass x velocity, the added velocity provided by the fuel creates the momentum that is needed to simulate the bowling ball effect.

The compressors r driven by turbines on a common shaft that r turned by the exhaust, like a pinwheel being spun in the wind. The exhaust energy that is used to power the compressors reduces the momentum of the exhaust, but does not eliminate it. There is still plenty of thrust left over to push the aircraft forward.
